Drake sues Universal Music for defamation related to Kendrick Lamar diss track 'Not Like Us'

The leading hip-hop superstar beef has been cranked up another notch, with Drake suing Universal Music Group for defamation over rival Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.” The lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in New York alleges UMG published and promoted the track, even though it included false pedophilia allegations against Drake and suggested listeners should resort to vigilante justice. Lamar is not named in the suit. Universal Music Group, the parent record label for both artists, denies the allegations. The lawsuit claims the track led to violence at Drake's home in Toronto, tarnished his reputation and decreased the value of his brand.

As Los Angeles burns, Hollywood's Oscar season turns into a pledge drive

When the Palisades Fire broke out in Los Angeles, Hollywood’s awards season was in full swing. The Golden Globes had transpired less than 48 hours earlier and a series of splashy awards banquets followed in the days after. But the enormity of the destruction in Southern California has quickly snuffed out all festiveness in the movie industry’s high season of celebration. The fires have struck at the very heart of a movie industry still trying to stabilize itself after years of pandemic, labor turmoil and technological upheaval. Not for the first time this decade, the Oscars are facing the question of: Should the show go on? And if it does, what do they mean now?

Movie Review: A family is torn apart under Brazil’s dictatorship in ‘I’m Still Here’

Walter Salles' film “I'm Still Here” tells the story of Eunice Paiva after the disappearance of her husband. Rubens Paiva was a leftist former congressman who in 1971 was taken from his family home and never returned. Eunice as portrayed by Fernanda Torres in her Golden Globe-winning performance has to carry on in uncertainty and fear while also raising her five children in his absence. AP Film Writer Lindsey Bahr writes that “Salles chooses to tell this story in a rather straightforward manner, which works well, allowing the compelling narrative and the talented actors to carry the audience through.” Rated PG-13, it opens in limited theaters Friday.

2 men get prison time for crimes connected to the killing of 'General Hospital' actor Johnny Wactor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two men convicted of lesser crimes connected to the killing of former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor have been sentenced to prison. Nineteen-year-old Leonel Gutierrez received a four-year sentence Wednesday after pleading no contest to grand theft and attempted robbery. Twenty-two-year-old Frank Olano was sentenced to five years and eight months after pleading no contest to being an accessory after the fact and receiving stolen property. Neither man was charged with killing Wactor, who was shot when he interrupted thieves stealing his car's catalytic converter in Los Angeles last year. Two 18-year-old co-defendants are charged with murder and headed to trial. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Music streams hit nearly 5 trillion in 2024. Women pop performers lead the charge in the US

Did you stream more music in 2024? You are not alone. The global music industry hit 4.8 trillion streams in 2024, setting a new single-year record. The figures are from Luminate’s 2024 Year-End Report. Pop music may have something to do with that increase. Midway through 2024, Luminate determined Latin music had become the fastest growing streaming genre in the United States. But a lot can change in half a year because now pop leads. Luminate says also in 2024, regional Mexican music overtook Latin pop as the largest Latin streaming subgenre in the U.S. R&B and hip-hop still dominate, accounting for more than one in four streams stateside.

Supreme Court seems open to age checks for online porn, though some free-speech questions remain

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court seems open to a Texas law aimed at blocking kids from seeing online pornography. But the justices could still send it back to a lower court for more consideration of how the age verification measure affects adults’ free-speech rights. Texas is among more than a dozen states with similar laws aimed at blocking young children and teenagers from viewing pornography. The states say they're trying to protect children from near-instantaneous access to porn on smartphones. Chief Justice John Roberts said Wednesday access to pornography has “exploded.” An adult-entertainment industry trade group called The Free Speech Coalition says the Texas law wrongly affects adults by requiring them to submit personal identifying information online.

'Conclave' leads race for British BAFTA film awards as thoughts focus on fires in LA

LONDON (AP) — Papal thriller “Conclave” leads the race for the British Academy Film Awards, with nominations in 12 categories. That's just ahead of the genre-busting musical “Emilia Perez" with 11. But the wildfires in Los Angeles over the past week are fresh in the minds of everyone in the movie industry. Wednesday’s announcement of the latest BAFTA nominations was subdued. Other leading contenders include the postwar epic “The Brutalist" with nine nominations, including best film and leading actor for Adrien Brody. The Palme d’Or winning “Anora,” the sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked” received seven nominations.

Movie Review: 'Wolf Man' is a toothless reboot that'll make you bark at the moon

Another classic cinematic monster has been dusted off in “Wolf Man,” an R-rated Blumhouse movie which hits theaters on Friday. Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy is not a fan, saying it is slack when it should be terrifying, and argues it suffers from cheap sentimentality, laughably obvious script reveals, poor continuity and a creature that is less predatory than painful. Pity comes to mind. Writer-director Leigh Whannell, who co-wrote the story with Corbett Tuck, leans on creepy sounds way too much, and Kennedy says it's a terrible misfire, a pop culture icon poorly rebooted by the modern home of horror.
